Reader's Digest Recognized Her Life-Saving Care
Lehigh Valley, PA
(April 13, 2007) -- Seventeen-year-old Stephanie Heater lain in Lehigh Valley Hospital in a medically induced coma. She was suffering from toxic shock syndrome, a potentially fatal bacterial infection linked to tampon use. Specialists used the latest technology to monitor her around the clock. A camera mounted in the ICU fed high-resolution video to specially educated doctors called tele-intensivists located off-site. Using video, audio and electronic charting, they interacted closely with bedside caregivers and responded immediately to any concerns. “We were on top of her care very minute, day and night,” says tele-intensivist Matthew McCambridge, M.D. “This incredible technology helped save Stephanie’s life.”
Heater beat the odds - just 50-50 - and graduated from the Lehigh Valley charter High School for the Performing Arts. Reader’s Digest named the technology that helped her survive among the “Best of America,” featured in the April 13th issue. Now, readers are being asked to vote for their favorite “Best” in the health category. Vote for “Best Cutting-Edge Care” by clicking here http://www.rd.com/boa/pollLanding.do
